Cherries on a Summer Day

Summer is in full swing and so is our cherry tree. When we first moved here we thought it was a crab apple tree but much to our surprise, gorgeous Rainier cherries popped out. Last summer was a wash. The temperature here went from snow to scorching hot to freezing cold and then back in a matter of days. The tree didn’t take it well. Many turned red and fell right away. The rest grew, but poorly. They never full ripened but Rusty and his crew (the neighbourhood squirrel gang) teamed up with the Starlings and cleared anything “good enough” to eat over the course of a rainy week.

This year has been a huge win though. The weather has been humid/hot but consistent and the cherries fared well. The first batch we picked were a little too early. We’re not farmers, and I have a black thumb. We’re learning. We’re enjoying the cherries now but also the satisfaction of picking our own food. (Currently searching Pinterest for canning and pie recipes!)

I hope you are all getting a chance to enjoy the warm summer days while they last. What are your favourite Summer activities? Do you prefer action packed, or do you really embrace the lazy days? Let me know in the comments what you’re up to with the famjam!
