Top 5: Witchy Halloween Movies

I can’t make a Top 5 Halloween movie list. It’s impossible. I love Halloween. I love movies. The amount of movies I re-watch every season is absolutely stupid. A Top 5 just wouldn’t cut it. So I’m breaking it down to a smaller category, Witchy Halloween Movies. These are my favourite movies to watch snuggled up on the couch after the kids are asleep. When you take out your hidden snacks and make yourself a hot cup of tea! I want to be clear though, this is a Witchy HALLOWEEN list. You will not find Harry Potter here. Those are Christmas movies…don’t @ me!

Practical Magic (1998)

I must have been a witch for Halloween at least 6 times as a kid. I didn’t want to be creepy or scary. I wanted to be a real witch. A every day witch, and I wished there was a movie like that. Where the witches were beautiful and had real lives, and their story didn’t solely revolve around Halloween. Then here comes Sandy B and my OG faves Wiest and Channing. (Yes, I was that weird kid that already knew too many actors names!) I was over the moon! This movie is highly re-watchable because it doesn’t just deliver a “Halloween” story. You can watch it any time of year and it stands on it’s own as a touching love story, but also a story about a woman finding her strength.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

EVERY SINGLE YEAR SINCE I WAS 10 YEARS OLD. First of all, Heeeeeey Eerie Indiana! I’ve called him that since he was ON Eerie, Indiana and I will continue to call him that. 10 year old Candice was stoked when this movie came out. The great thing about it is that it’s peppered with hilariously inappropriate jokes that only got better and funnier as I grew up. Watching Hocus Pocus as an adult is just as awesome as when I was a kid just in a different way. (Still totally jealous of Eerie Indiana’s room though!)

Bell, Book, & Candle (1958)

Gorgeous! Kim Novak’s posture is just outrageous. I pretty much look like I have scoliosis in comparison. She’s so good. If there’s an award for giving the evil eye she deserves it. Jack Lemmon is also one of my all time favourites so I love that he plays her brother in this. He brings a lighter aspect to the story with his natural charm and comedic timing.

Witches of Eastwick (1987)

I swear I had nightmares about cherry pits for ages after I watched this the first time but it’s still one of my faves. Awesome cast, great story, impressive hair volume!

Willow (1988)

Willow isn’t really a Halloween movie, but it is fantasy and it does have witches and wizards, and I like that Willow doesn’t “fit” all of the classic witchy tropes. He’s just a dude, trying his dang best. He isn’t born to some legacy, or secretly super powerful, but he loves magic and wants to do good. Add in an excellent villain, hilarious brownies, and my boy Vally Kilmers, and you’ve got a great movie!

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. “Where the ef is The Craft?” I knoooow, but here’s the thing, as much as there are things about that movie I love (and especially loved when it came out…Skeet Ulrich *coughcough) I don’t think it aged particularly well. In fact, I find much of it down right cringe worthy now. Maybe because I actually wore chokers… Anyway, the cast left much to be desired even when I was 12 and super excited about this movie coming out, and I could never get on board with Robin Tunney’s wig. Who did they think they were fooling…Damn The Man/Save The Empire!

I could write a Top 5 on Tim Burton alone! Casper, The Addams Family, Ernest Scared Stupid, so many classic horrors, the list goes on and on! What are your favourite Halloween movies?
